Practice Lab 2: Risk Communication Town Meeting

Climate Change – California Wildfire

I have done simulated health care in an emergency situation before, but it was nothing like this. It was very daunting, and it shook my confidence being in public health for a moment. It seemed easy when other groups were performing, but in reality, it was tough to do. It was a group project, and each group member had a role to play of mayor, doctor, hospital director, and environmental health officer. The most common climate change we talk about is sea level rise, global warming, and hurricanes. But Dr. Blando had a different plan for us, and he presented a California wildfire scenario.

We had five minutes to discuss our risk communication strategy. We managed to answer the public’s questions, and we used all our MPH knowledge to resolve the issue. It showed us the significance of public health and public health officials. Public health officials are responsible for developing an action plan for an emergency situation like this.
