About LeADERS
The LeADERS program at ODU is designed to help students gain hands-on experience while strengthening their leadership, analytical, research, and writing skills through a variety of coursework and professional development opportunities. These include career development workshops, philosophy and writing-intensive courses, volunteer experiences, and many other activities that prepare students for success throughout their academic journey at ODU and in their future careers.
Why did I join LeADERS?
When I was first introduced to the LeADERS program, I found it very appealing. To put the cherry on top, I was impressed to learn that completing the program would award me with a medal that I could proudly wear. I thought about how all the hard work and late-night studying would truly pay off, and I found the idea both exciting and rewarding. Additionally, I really liked the concept of recognizing students with medals for their achievements while pursuing their degree. It motivates students to learn beyond just their academic courses and encourages them to become more involved in different experiences.
After learning more about the program, I contacted my advisor for additional information and discovered that I had already completed some LeADERS courses through my interdisciplinary and writing classes. This gave me an extra push to complete the remaining requirements and earn this distinction. From that point on, I looked for every opportunity to complete as many LeADERS courses as possible.
While pursuing these courses, I realized how valuable they are for students. Personally, I gained and improved many essential skills, including communication, teamwork, analytical thinking, research, and writing skills, among others. These are all important skills that I can showcase to potential recruiters after graduation. I am confident that this experience will help me achieve my desired career in the field of cybersecurity.
Challenges I Encountered and How I Overcame ThemÂ
It would be a lie to say that it was an easy journey. Every semester was filled with challenges and obstacles, but I am glad that I never gave up. Instead, I treated every challenge as a learning opportunity. At times, I had to work throughout the day and stay up late at night to complete assignments and homework. One semester, I even balanced an internship along with my on-campus job. In addition, I was actively involved in cybersecurity clubs and participated in Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions, which further added to my workload. These challenges actually allowed me to improve my time management skills.
My mantra for overcoming challenges is positive thinking. I focus on the positive outcomes I can gain from difficult situations. For example, when I was struggling with my writing classes, I reminded myself that writing is a critical communication skill—an essential ability in the field of cybersecurity, where collaboration plays a major role. Additionally, it involves interdisciplinary research, analytical thinking, and critical thinking, all of which are valuable skills for a cybersecurity professional.
By focusing on how much I could learn and grow from these courses, I began to see them as opportunities rather than obstacles. These skills benefit both my personal and professional development.
This kind of mindset always pushes me to step out of my comfort zone and keep improving.
Future Goals and Aspirations
After completing my degree, I plan to work as a cybersecurity analyst, and help organizations protect their networks and systems from evolving cyber threats. I am open to opportunities in both the private sector and federal agencies. Furthermore, since I am now CompTIA Security+ certified along with LeaADERS distinction, I am confident in my ability to land my desired job. I believe that this program played a crucial role in my professional development as it helped me develop all the essential skills including leadership, communication, research, and analytical thinking, which are highly valued in the cybersecurity field.
Lastly, my short-term goal is to gain valuable experience through professional roles and internships, and build a strong foundation in the field. Over time, I hope to continue growing, advancing in my career, and taking on greater responsibilities in cybersecurity.
