The Integrated Lead Poisoning Prevention Project

The lead poisoning practice lab was an experiment about finding lead source hazards that could affect people’s health in a mock community while also recommending risk communication strategies for reaching different audiences and sectors in the mock community. Key questions were lead sources would affect the most people and what cultural factors in the mock community are essential to communicate lead poisoning information; strategies used to answer those questions include critical thinking skills and knowledge obtained about lead poisoning and the specific mock community. Findings included that deteriorating homes were likely to affect the most people in the mock community due to chips and cracks that produce dust, and since people are mostly at home, they are constantly breathing in the lead. Recommendations included communication strategies to communicate to different audiences about lead poisoning. The public health significance of this project is learning how to identify a problem and fix it by effectively communicating risk strategies that can be understood by different audiences and cultures in a community.
