The Arizona Wildcats defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs 102-44 in front of an excited crowd at McKale Center to kick off the 2024-2025 season. From the start, Arizona demonstrated why they are one of the best teams in the country, controlling both ends of the court in a dominant performance that left no doubt about the outcome.
The Wildcats, who are among the top schools this season, shown their depth and quality. Arizona’s offense ran well, and they immediately established a dominating lead. The Wildcats’ height and agility were on full display as they dominated the paint and the boards. Arizona’s defense suffocated Old Dominion, forcing multiple turnovers that they turned into easy baskets.
Tobe Awaka, a sophomore forward, was the game’s star, recording a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds while making 8 of 10 field goals. His play on both sides of the court was a major reason the Wildcats were able to pull away early. Arizona’s head coach, Tommy Lloyd, hailed Awaka’s performance after the game: “Tobe was fantastic tonight. He played with incredible energy and really set the tone for us. In addition to Awaka’s outstanding performance, numerous other Wildcats helped secure the victory. Carter Bryant appeared poised in his college debut, scoring 12 points in 20 minutes. Seniors Henri Veesaar and Caleb Love each scored ten points, highlighting Arizona’s strong depth. The Wildcats had 12 players contribute to the score, demonstrating that this team’s strength is its ability to rotate and apply pressure on opponents throughout the game.
Old Dominion struggled to match Arizona’s effort and did not establish a rhythm. They were outrun and outmuscled on both ends of the court, with the Wildcats building a 30-point advantage at halftime. The Monarchs managed only 44 points in all, demonstrating Arizona’s defensive pressure.
“We knew this game was going to be important to get our season off on the right foot,” said senior guard Caleb Love. “We came out with a lot of energy, and that’s what you saw tonight. When we’re clicking on both ends, we’re tough to beat.”
The outcome of the match was decided long before the final buzzer, and Arizona’s dominating victory sends a message to the rest of the NCAA: they are prepared for the difficulties that lie ahead.
