SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

Something that helped me gain an understanding of the culture in Spanish-Speaking countries was the ‘Exploracion cultural” sections in Lingrolearning. This example shows which countries think about issues like gender inequality in sports. Since sports and gender equality often go hand and hand all over the world, it helped me gain a greater understanding of these cultural perspectives.

When reading the Exploracion cultural portions of each unit, I realized that my country and spanish speaking countires are not that different. We go through some of the same issues like gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and mental health. I try not to think in stereotypical was but learning about new perspectives has given me more insight on those countries.

Engaging in Communities

The picture below shows comments on my project from unit 7 which was to create a flyer informing students of clubs on campus that they can join.

I think commenting and receiving comments from my classmates was a great way to get feedback on my projects and communicate with the little community that is my spanish class. I engaged with my community through commenting on from my classmates on my Linerolearning projects.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad is a website in which students learing different languages can talk to native speakers or 15 or 30 minutes. You can pick your speaking partner and even their profile to gain information about them so you have more things to talk about with them.

The video below is audio of my first, and in my opinion, my best TalkAbroad conversation. I think our conversation went very well. We talked about where we have family and other extensive topics about family. I was surprised that I was able to understand and continue the conversation about extended family. I was able to put together almost exactly what she was saying through context clues and her hand gestures.

Presentational Speaking

The video below is from project 8, the #AyerComi challenge. It was a cooking challenge where you talked about what you had to eat the day before.

The thing I struggled with most in this project was reaching the video length requirement. I overcame this challenge by rewriting some of my script. I would rather be short of the word count than start talking about random things just to reach. I think my speaking and pronunciation skills are very good so I think I excelled there.

Presentational Writing

This is a flyer/ advertisement I made to inform my spanish speaking audience of stress and how to protect yourself from anxiety and bad energy.

We had many writing projects and one thing I struggled with was keeping the word count. Reaching 150 words was very difficult for me. I would try to study and memorize exactly what I wanted to write but when it came to it, I would forget some of the things I wanted to write about. This specific project helped me because I was able to remember other things that related to my topic that I could talk about and reach the word count.

Interpretive Reading & Listening

I decided to add this screenshot and combine both of the interpretive reading and listening. The screenshot shows the ‘Texto: Conectando talentos’ section from unit 10.

This section gave both audio, visual, and written desciptions of people and how they got to their current jobs. For example, it would show a people a person who looked like they are a school teacher. I then had to listen to the audio and and interpret what they studied, what jod they originally, and what the turning point was in their life that led them to their current job. This was challenging for me because I have trouble listening to audio because I am not able to slow them dow. But I overcame this by going over it in class with my classmates and teacher as well as partner work and communicating with my classmates on what they could gather from what the audio said. There would also be written questions that we had to read and answer based on the audio.
