SPAN 475W

This course is a research-based class with a small group of Spanish majors. Each student is assigned to write a research paper with a topic of their interest — mostly connected to the skills/concepts that they have learned during their journey in the university. Our assignments consisted of the major parts of writing a paper, such as writing a prospectus, annotated bibliography, clarification essay, first draft, peer review, etc. Throughout the semester, we had in-depth discussions in class about applying the appropriate research methods and theoretical framework related to our chosen topic.

Prospectus

This was a short paper explaining the subject that we expect to write about for our paper. It’s basically a proposal describing why we chose the topic, what we already know about it, and how we plan to address the problem.

Annotated Bibliography

This is a compilation of the sources that we plan to use for our paper. It consists of 7-10 books, scholarly articles, academic journals, etc.

Clarification Essay

This was an essay where we had to organize our ideas and incorporate the information that we evaluated from the academic sources from our annotated bibliography. Like its title, this piece of writing is about clarifying what we feel, think, believe and know about the subject of our paper.

First Draft

This is a version of our paper that is complete but not totally polished. We had to meet with our professor for an interview after writing our draft to talk about ideas for revision and other adjustments regarding grammar, content, and organization.

Oral Presentation

A 15-minute video presentation of our paper to check if it makes sense and flows.

Final Draft

This is our draft paper reflecting a polished paper after all the revisions. My paper ended up being 14 pages along with citations. My paper focuses on how intercultural barriers between newly arrived international students and domestic student mentors hinder the development of an effective relationship which is preventing them from benefiting from the opportunities and resources offered by the mentoring program at the university.

Reflection Paper

A reflection paper in English of my experience in the course.
