An Effective Reflection Is

During my time in the course, there were certainly a lot of things i struggled with, specifically conjugation. The amount of tenses there were made it difficult for me to determine which one to use at times because it was so confusing. As a result of my high workload, there were times when I was not able to practice the key understandings that I had gained during the course of my studies. In spite of the fact that I did not excel in this course, I enjoyed the conversations I was able to have with both the instructor and an individuals that participated in Talk Abroad. This experience gave me a chance to demonstrate my Spanish speaking.

Artifacts

A good artifact is a portion or clip of an assignment. It needs to be carefully selected to provide evidence/proof that supports what you are saying in your reflection.

Your reflection will help you determine what that will be. It is a quest for quality. It will represent you academically and professionally, and have personal meaning. It can be written, audio, or video.

At the end, ask yourself if the artifacts best demonstrates your abilities and growth over time.

At the end of your reflection in each section, link or embed the assignment/artifact. If the assignment has multiple pages and seems to overwhelm the section, consider adding just the first page and offering to provide the rest upon request.

Exploring Culture

Hispanic culture in a whole is very diverse in many categorizes. After completing my two conversation I noticed that not all individual living in Spanish speaking countries eat or live the same way.

After finishing my conversation on TalkAbroad, I picked up a few interesting facts. When discussing my favorite food, I mentioned a Puerto Rican dish. Unaware of our difference, I assumed that she knew it because we both came from an Hispanic Heritage. However, we were able to compare a similar dish that I did recognize when she showed me. In my second conversation, when discussing food we usually eat I mentioned “arroz y gandules”. Surprisingly, my partner was unfamiliar with that word so she had to look it up. After getting its translation, she realized that the word she was looking for was simply another word for frijoles. Another discussion I did encounter was with my instructor. In this conversation we discussed how many words that Puerto Rican’s may say are not similar to the language being taught in the class, so I had to be careful.

Engaging in Communities

Having the ability to engage with pother communities is a great advantage to have. This ability allows you to interact with those coming from a different background. In class, we had the opportunity to create Flipgrids in which we used to interact with other individuals taking this course. Although I cam into this activity nervous, the overall purpose was to become comfortable in speaking Spanish.

Interpersonal Communication

One of the requirement for this course was to complete two TalkAbroad conversation. When reading the brief description of this assignment a rush of anxiety came to me. However, there was a side of me that was excited for this exposure. Outside of the class, there are plenty of times were i would have a short conversation with my grandma in Spanish. Doing this helped me beforehand when doing one-on-one conversations..

Going into the TalkAbroad assignment I became very nervous because of the uncertainty I face. The reason for my uncertainty was solely because I was worried that I would be unable to understand some words brought up during our conversation. Although it was expected, there were times where I didn’t understand words; however, I had to continue the conversation. For example, during my last conversation, in the beginning, my partner complimented my hair and said it was very long. She then asked esas trenza? Unsure of what this word meant, I assumed it meant braids because she used a had movement.

Presentational Speaking

Overall, throughout my experience in this class, presentational speaking was my favorite. Getting the opportunity to talk in Spanish was fun and I enjoyed every minute of it.

During presentational speaking, I face a few challenges. Some of them include the way I formed sentences or simple just not remembering the word I was going to say. This was mainly influenced by my lack of being able to recall certain words. However, in each of the assignments that involved speaking I excelled and passed with a 100% every time. My prior knowledge and practicing as many times as I could fully helped my growth in this class. This was a big accomplishment for me because I thought because of my problems going on outside of school I thought I would do horribly( I proved myself wrong).

Presentational Writing

In this course, there were may instances where we used writing as a form of communication. For example, our discussion post, quizzes, and test all required us to type in Spanish.

This part of the course was the most complicated for me because of how much conjugation and Spanish marks needed to be included. For example, especially in quizzes, there were times where mixed up irregular preterite tense verbs with present tense. In order to do better in Spanish 201, I must focus on repeatedly studying the ending of a verb (more than once). For example, I need to be sure to used the tools available to me in order to practice.

Interpretive Listening

In this course we completed activities such as Talk Abroad, one on one conversations with the instructor, Flipgrid, and LingroLearning. In addition, there were times were the quizzes include audio of Spanish speakers.

During this semester, I learned plenty of new words I didn’t know before within this course and from family members. In TalkAbroad, I struggled the most with trying to understand what my partner was saying. Not because I didn’t understand the vocabulary, more so their speed of talking. This is very common with many Spanish Speakers. However, I found it the most easy when listening audio. The recordings spoke in a clear and nicely paced manner.

Interpretive Reading

To focus on our interpretive reading skills, this course incorporarted many sources written in Spanish . This worked included assignments on LingroLearning, quizzes, articles on healthcare, and dialogue.

It upsets me because I wasn’t able to get the full experience of LingroLearning. but when I did get the chance to complete the exercises, I found conjugation to be the most challenging. Similar to the quizzes, there were times were was unsure of what form to use. This lead to a bad grade in some of my quizzes. However, when reading about healthcare in Spain, my confidence when reading it was high because I was shocked I understood what was being said. My usage of context clues is what helped when I was assigned readings.
