Exploring Culture
The artifacts shown above helped me develop an understanding of cultural perspectives. The first artifact, the poem titled La Negra Bella is about colorism in the Dominican/ Latino community. the second artifact is my analysis of Monet McMichael, a famous influencer who represents modern identity and self-expression. Both projects deepened my cultural awareness.
The poem La Negra Bella made me question my perspective through the prevalence of colorism and standards of beauty within society. I related to the self-acceptance journey that the protagonist took and reflected on stereotypes about beauty. Monet McMichael’s influence taught me how media shapes identity and inspires confidence. These projects underlined the need to embrace diversity and tear down stereotypes. Through them, I realized shared struggles but also resilience within communities. If I did these over, I’d connect them more to global cultural experiences.

This semester, I did some interpersonal activities to improve my spanish speaking. I practiced through spontaneous conversations with my Puerto Rican family members over food, current events, and family topics. I participated in discussions with my WEPA dance teammates.. This enabled me to improve my speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills in real-life situations.

This was both a challenging and rewarding experience. These unscripted conversations required me to think quickly and adapt to their pace and comprehension. Initially, I struggled with understanding their fast speech, but I overcame this by asking for clarification and practicing phrases they frequently used. These interactions helped me grow in confidence and fluency, especially in listening comprehension and pronunciation. I connected with them very well through cultural discussions since I was genuinely interested and had something to say on those topics. I learned a lot more about this language and its complexities. her.

Presentational Speaking

This semester, I completed a presentational speaking activity where I read the poem La Negra Bella aloud to my class for Proyecto 19. Although I felt nervous about mispronouncing the words, I practiced extensively, including reading the poem to my grandmother for feedback.
Reading La Negra Bella was a challenge because I was afraid to mispronounce any of the words, but practice helped me get over that fear. My abuela gave me confidence, and I was able to deliver the poem without mispronouncing any words. I did very well with the expression, but next time, I would practice more in front of an audience to feel more comfortable.

Presentational Writing
This semester, I completed several written presentational activities: reflections about poems in Spanish, essays about people who influenced me, and one about an experience important to who I am today. It was through these assignments that personal experiences and cultural exploration linked up.
Writing reflections on poems and cultural topics deepened my understanding of Spanish language and culture. At first, organizing my ideas in Spanish was challenging, but consistent practice made it easier to express myself clearly. I excelled at incorporating personal insights into my writing, which added depth. However, I could improve by expanding my vocabulary to make my writing more dynamic. Each activity helped me grow in confidence, creativity, and cultural appreciation. Next time, I’ll focus on polishing grammar and exploring more complex themes.

Brief Description:
This semester, I listened to videos on LingroLearning, where speakers from different countries discussed their traditions and daily lives, and I also practiced by listening to my grandmother speak Spanish at home. These activities enhanced my listening skills and cultural understanding.
Listening to LingroLearning videos was challenging due to the variety of accents and rapid speech, but replaying sections and focusing on key phrases helped me adapt. Listening to my grandmother was more personal, giving me insight into real-life usage and cultural nuances. I found it compelling to hear diverse traditions, which expanded my understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures. My takeaway was the importance of consistent practice and exposure to different accents. With each activity, my comprehension and confidence in listening improved.

Interpretive Reading

Brief Description:
This semester, I have engaged in interpretive communication activities: reading aloud in Spanish in class and completing assignments on Lingro Learning. Reading aloud was fun since it allowed me to practice the pronunciation of words, while the Lingro Learning tasks were sometimes a bit difficult when I did not fully understand the material.
Reading aloud in class gave me confidence in my speaking, but the assignments from Lingro Learning tested my comprehension. When not clear, I overcame the difficulties by asking for clarification from my instructor or classmates. The process was rewarding, having fun in pronunciations and understanding cultural texts. Probably, my greatest takeaway from this class was the value of persistence and seeking help when needed. I got to improve my vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence with each assignment.
