In a powerful performance, the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team defeated the Villanova Wildcats 82-54 in the Big East Tournament semifinals on Sunday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena. The victory sends UConn into their 21st consecutive conference tournament final, where they will compete for their 12th straight title (Connolly).

The Huskies were led by standout guard Paige Bueckers, who delivered an impressive 23 points and six assists. Bueckers set the tone early, scoring 21 points in the first half and shooting 9-of-13 from the field (Connolly). Freshman forward Sarah Strong was a dominant presence in the paint, nearly achieving a double-double by halftime with 10 points and nine rebounds. She finished the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds, marking her fifth double-double of the season. Azzi Fudd also contributed significantly, adding 15 points, including three three-pointers.

The game began with both teams exchanging baskets, leading to a tightly contested first quarter. Villanova’s perimeter shooting kept them within reach, but UConn’s defensive adjustments in the second quarter shifted the momentum. The Huskies implemented a full-court press that disrupted the Wildcats’ offensive rhythm, resulting in multiple turnovers. This defensive intensity fueled a 12-2 run, allowing UConn to establish a double-digit lead. At halftime, UConn led 47-37, shooting an impressive 63% from the field and 44% from three-point range. Villanova struggled to find consistent scoring, shooting 43% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc (Connolly).

In the second half, the Huskies continued to assert their dominance over Villanova. Their defensive pressure intensified, limiting Villanova to just 17 points after the break. UConn’s depth was on full display, with bench players contributing 20 points, underscoring the team’s versatility and cohesion. Villanova’s leading scorer, Maddie Burke, managed 12 points but faced relentless defense from UConn, limiting her effectiveness. The Wildcats struggled with turnovers, committing 18, which UConn converted into 24 points.

This victory not only secures UConn’s spot in the Big East Tournament final but also showcases their readiness for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Huskies will face the winner of the Creighton vs. Seton Hall semifinal in the championship game, aiming to extend their conference dominance and secure an automatic bid to the national tournament.

UConn’s performance in this semifinal underscores their resilience and depth, qualities that will be essential as they pursue another national championship.
