3 Skillsets

1ST Skillset: Educational Technology Integration and Facilitation

Reflecting on my experience in the buoyancy and boat design session with ninth and tenth graders, I realize that this opportunity greatly developed my ability to integrate educational technology and facilitate hands-on learning. The session required me to explain buoyancy principles in a way that was both accessible and engaging. By using real-world scenarios, such as how cargo-carrying ships stay afloat, I helped students understand complex concepts and encouraged them to think critically. This not only deepened their understanding but also sparked creativity as they worked to design their own boats.

One of the key aspects of this experience was teaching the students how to use Tinkercad and 3D printing to create their boat models. I guided them step-by-step through the design process, ensuring they understood how to use the software. This was a great opportunity for me to blend technical skills with teaching, as I had to adjust my explanations based on their varying levels of understanding. It was rewarding to see them apply their learning to a hands-on project, and it demonstrated how technology can bring abstract concepts to life.

Throughout the session, I also encountered and addressed technical challenges with the 3D printers, which helped me develop problem-solving skills. Managing these technical issues, while ensuring the students stayed engaged, showed me how important it is to be adaptable in a classroom setting. It was a valuable experience in not just teaching, but also troubleshooting and ensuring the smooth flow of a project that involved technology.

In addition to the technical aspects, my communication skills were key. Teaching students how to use design software required clear and concise instructions. I had to adjust my teaching style to match the students’ varying levels of familiarity with the technology, which helped me improve my communication strategies. This experience reinforced the importance of being able to explain complex concepts in an understandable and accessible way.

Another aspect I developed was my ability to lead and organize large group activities. From the logistics of event setup and cleanup to coordinating the flow of the activity, I learned how important planning and organization are to ensure a smooth experience for all participants. This helped me gain confidence in managing a group, keeping everyone on task, and supporting the students throughout the session.

Finally, this experience highlighted the value of teamwork and collaboration. Working with other team members to deliver the workshop required effective communication and task delegation. We had to work together to ensure the logistics were handled properly and that the activity ran smoothly. I learned the importance of collaborating with others to create a positive learning environment.

In summary, this experience was instrumental in developing my skills in educational technology integration, technical communication, leadership, and teamwork. I now feel more confident in my ability to incorporate technology into my teaching, communicate effectively with diverse learners, and collaborate with others to create engaging educational experiences. As I continue to refine these skills, I am excited to use them in future projects and teaching opportunities.

2ND Skillset: Event Management and Community Engagement

Participating in the Maritime Career Festival at the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News was a transformative experience, allowing me to hone my event management and community engagement skills. Coordinating exhibits and stations for this event required meticulous planning and organization. Ensuring that all materials, supplies, and equipment were available on time demanded careful attention to detail and a proactive approach to troubleshooting potential issues. For example, I learned to assess the flow of the event space, arrange resources in an accessible manner, and communicate effectively with team members to address last-minute adjustments. This hands-on exposure to event logistics enhanced my ability to manage complex projects, skills that are transferable to future events and educational programs.

Another essential aspect of this experience was engaging with diverse audiences, which significantly strengthened my communication abilities. Interacting with visitors of varying ages and knowledge levels challenged me to adapt my explanations and teaching style to make the exhibits relatable and engaging. When speaking to younger audiences, I focused on simplifying technical concepts and incorporating analogies to make maritime topics more accessible. Conversely, engaging with adults often required a more detailed explanation, drawing on industry-specific examples to capture their interest. This dual approach to communication taught me the importance of flexibility and audience awareness when presenting information, a skill I can carry forward in my role as a Program Assistant and beyond.

The festival also served as a gateway for exploring the practical applications of the skills and equipment I’ve been working with in the iLab. Seeing how technology, such as 3D printing and design software, could be integrated into maritime scenarios inspired me to think creatively about educational opportunities. For instance, I envisioned using 3D printing to develop small-scale ship models for students, allowing them to experiment with buoyancy and stability in a hands-on manner. Additionally, the event sparked ideas for incorporating career exploration into future Makerspace workshops, such as teaching the basics of shipbuilding or logistics to connect students with potential pathways in the maritime industry.

Reflecting on this experience, I also realized the importance of teamwork and collaboration in executing a successful event. Working with other team members to coordinate the festival required clear communication, effective task delegation, and mutual support. This collaborative environment not only helped the event run smoothly but also taught me the value of drawing on the strengths of my colleagues to achieve common goals. These lessons in teamwork will undoubtedly enhance my ability to contribute meaningfully to future projects, both within and outside the iLab.

The Maritime Career Festival was not only a platform for engaging with the community but also a valuable learning experience that allowed me to develop skills in event planning, communication, and teamwork. It has motivated me to continue exploring innovative ways to connect hands-on learning with real-world applications. Moving forward, I am excited to build on these experiences to create meaningful, engaging activities for K-12 students, bridging technical concepts with practical, industry-relevant challenges. This experience has further solidified my commitment to fostering educational experiences that are interactive, inclusive, and impactful.

3RD Skillset: Event Coordination and Community Engagement

The recent STEM Day at the Brooks Crossing Innovation Lab was an invaluable experience for my internship, providing me with a chance to develop my skills in event coordination, community engagement, and logistics management. The event, which attracted over 1,000 people, required careful planning and organization to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all participants. I was involved in multiple facets of the event, starting with aiding families during the sign-in process. By utilizing iPads and QR codes for waivers, I helped ensure that the registration process was quick and efficient, setting a positive tone for the event from the very beginning.

Once the sign-in process was complete, I took on the responsibility of distributing robots, equipment, and supplies, such as tape, scissors, and clipboards. Each child was assigned a robot, and I demonstrated how to use the equipment, ensuring that the kids felt confident and prepared for the challenges ahead. This aspect of the event allowed me to engage directly with the participants, answering any questions they had and guiding them through the various activities. My role also involved troubleshooting any issues that arose with the robots, ensuring that the activities could continue without delays.

As the event progressed, I moved between different stations, assisting families as they completed challenges with their robots. This required adaptability and strong communication skills. Whether answering questions about the tasks or offering suggestions for solving problems, I was able to help families stay engaged and motivated throughout the event. Managing the limited number of robots was another challenge that tested my organizational abilities. I had to coordinate the flow of participants, ensuring that as one family completed a task, another could step in to use the equipment without disrupting the overall event schedule.

Throughout the day, I observed how critical clear communication, adaptability, and teamwork were in managing such a large-scale event. Working alongside other team members to address logistical challenges was an excellent lesson in collaboration and problem-solving. The success of the event, captured in photographs of the engaged attendees, was a testament to the careful planning and teamwork that went into organizing it.

Overall, STEM Day helped me develop a deeper understanding of the importance of hands-on learning in inspiring curiosity and creativity. The event reinforced my belief in the transformative potential of STEM outreach and emphasized the role of interactive experiences in fostering a love for learning. My participation in this event has not only enhanced my event coordination and community interaction skills but also strengthened my commitment to making STEM education more accessible and engaging for diverse audiences. These skills will be valuable as I continue to design and facilitate educational programs, particularly those that encourage students to explore and innovate in STEM fields.
