Personal Narrative Essay: Reflecting on My Academic, Work, and Internship Journey
As a rising senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, I have spent the past few years immersing myself in the world of technology, security, and innovation. This journey has been shaped by both academic learning and hands-on experiences, and it has ultimately led me to the field of educational technology and STEM outreach. While my primary academic focus is on cybersecurity, I have also gained valuable insights into how technology can be used to engage students and enhance their learning experiences. My internship at the Brooks Crossing Innovation Lab has played a pivotal role in helping me bridge the gap between my academic studies and real-world applications, providing me with an opportunity to develop essential skills in educational technology, event management, and community engagement.
Reflecting on my internship, one of the most rewarding experiences was working with middle and high school students during various STEM-focused activities. I have always believed in the power of hands-on learning to make complex concepts more accessible, and my role as a Program Assistant allowed me to facilitate such learning experiences. For example, during a buoyancy and boat design session, I helped students apply theoretical principles of buoyancy to real-world challenges, guiding them as they designed and tested their boat models. This hands-on approach not only sparked the students’ creativity but also fostered critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I also had the opportunity to teach students how to use Tinkercad to create 3D printed boat models, reinforcing my belief in the importance of integrating technology into educational experiences.
Through these activities, I developed a deeper understanding of how technology can be used to engage students in a meaningful way. My internship has reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career that combines technology with education, specifically in the field of cybersecurity and STEM outreach. As I continue to hone my skills, I am excited about the prospect of creating and facilitating educational programs that inspire students to explore the world of technology and innovation. Moving forward, I plan to continue exploring ways in which I can make STEM education more accessible and engaging for all students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
In addition to my work with students, my internship provided valuable insights into the logistics of event management and community engagement. During events like the Maritime Career Festival and STEM Day, I gained hands-on experience in organizing, coordinating, and facilitating large-scale events. These events helped me develop strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, all of which will be essential as I continue my career in cybersecurity and education. The opportunity to interact with diverse audiences also deepened my understanding of the importance of adapting content to different age groups and levels of knowledge.
Throughout my internship, I faced challenges that tested my abilities and helped me grow both personally and professionally. For example, during STEM Day, I had to quickly troubleshoot technical issues with equipment and manage the flow of participants to ensure that the event ran smoothly. These experiences taught me how to remain calm under pressure and think critically to solve problems. They also reinforced the importance of clear communication, both with colleagues and with event participants. I learned how to delegate tasks effectively, collaborate with team members, and maintain a positive and welcoming atmosphere for all attendees.
In conclusion, my internship at the Brooks Crossing Innovation Lab has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It has allowed me to apply my academic learning in real-world settings, develop valuable skills in educational technology and event management, and engage with diverse audiences in meaningful ways. As I continue my academic journey and move forward in my career, I am excited to build on these experiences and contribute to the future of STEM education and cybersecurity.
Skillset 1: Educational Technology Integration and Facilitation
One of the key skills I developed during my internship was integrating educational technology into hands-on learning experiences. Working with K-12 students in various sessions, I was able to demonstrate the power of technology in making abstract concepts more tangible and engaging. One of the most impactful activities was a buoyancy and boat design session, where I guided students through using Tinkercad to create 3D printed boat models. This task required students to apply their understanding of buoyancy principles to design functional boats that could carry a given weight. As they iterated on their designs, they saw how changes to their models affected the boat’s performance, which reinforced the connection between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.
Throughout the process, I ensured that students understood how to use the design software effectively. This was particularly important for students who were unfamiliar with 3D modeling tools. By walking them through each step of the process, I helped them build confidence in using the technology and allowed them to focus on the creativity of their designs rather than being overwhelmed by the technical aspects. I also provided troubleshooting assistance when needed, which improved my problem-solving skills and ability to convey complex concepts in a simplified manner.
Another example of my work in educational technology integration was my involvement in assisting students during STEM Day. In this large-scale event, I helped manage a robotics station, where kids used robots to complete various challenges. The event provided me with an opportunity to see firsthand how technology can enhance STEM education and encourage hands-on learning. I worked with a team to ensure that each child was equipped with the right tools, and I also facilitated troubleshooting sessions to address any technical issues with the robots. This experience further reinforced my belief in the importance of educational technology in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Skillset 2: Event Management and Community Engagement
Another essential skill I honed during my internship was event management, particularly in large-scale settings. At both the Maritime Career Festival and STEM Day, I was responsible for various aspects of event logistics, from setting up exhibits and ensuring that materials were available to assisting families and engaging with visitors. My role required careful coordination and attention to detail, ensuring that everything ran smoothly throughout the day.
One key challenge I faced during these events was managing the flow of participants, particularly when working with limited resources such as robotics kits. I had to ensure that each family received the necessary materials while keeping the event schedule on track. This required me to work closely with colleagues to delegate tasks, communicate clearly with participants, and anticipate any issues that might arise. By staying organized and flexible, I was able to contribute to the success of these events and ensure that attendees had a positive experience.
In addition to the logistical challenges, I also had the opportunity to engage directly with the community. Whether answering questions about the exhibits or guiding families through activities, I was able to connect with attendees and make them feel welcome. This experience taught me the importance of clear communication and the need to adapt my approach depending on the audience. I also learned how to manage time effectively and maintain a positive attitude, even during busy and high-pressure moments.
Skillset 3: Event Coordination and Community Engagement
Event coordination and community engagement were core elements of my internship, and I gained valuable experience in both areas. My role during the STEM Day event demonstrated the importance of teamwork, communication, and adaptability in managing large-scale events. I assisted in the distribution of robots and supplies and helped troubleshoot technical issues, all while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for attendees. This hands-on involvement in event coordination allowed me to develop skills in organizing, managing, and facilitating events.
One aspect of event coordination that stood out to me was the need to balance multiple responsibilities simultaneously. From ensuring that attendees had access to the right materials to troubleshooting technical issues on the fly, I had to stay organized and adaptable. This required me to communicate effectively with my team and with participants, ensuring that the event ran smoothly and that everyone had a positive experience.
Through these experiences, I also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of community engagement. By interacting with attendees and ensuring that they had a meaningful experience, I was able to help foster a sense of connection and excitement around STEM education. This experience reinforced my commitment to making STEM more accessible and engaging for diverse audiences and inspired me to continue exploring ways to integrate technology into educational outreach efforts.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my internship at the Brooks Crossing Innovation Lab has been an incredibly enriching experience that has allowed me to develop a range of skills in educational technology, event management, and community engagement. These skills will be invaluable as I continue my academic journey and move forward in my career. Through hands-on learning experiences and meaningful interactions with students, families, and colleagues, I have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of STEM education and the role that technology plays in making learning more engaging and accessible. I am excited to continue building on these experiences as I pursue a career that combines technology, education, and community outreach.
