Course: PHIL 335E – Cybersecurity Ethics
Artifact Type: Ethics Research Assignment
Overview
This assignment led me to examine the ethical implications of mass data collection through Kant’s Formula of Universal Law. I focused on whether collecting personal information without consent could be considered an ethical practice and used research on consumer privacy to support my decision.
My Work
I argued that the primary ethical concern with mass data collection in the collection and use of personal information without meaningful informed consent. I applied Kant’s Formula of Universal Laz to consider what would happen is collecting personal data without consent became a standard practice followed by all organizations. I also incorporated outside research to examine how providing users with understandable privacy information and choices can support more informed decisions about their personal data.

Skills Demonstrated
Writing about data collection form an ethical standpoint requires communication on a position that involved more than a purely technical cybersecurity issue. I had to explain an ethical framework, apply that to a modern privacy concern, and use outside research to support my reasoning. This assignment demonstrates my ability to communicate a position clearly and support an argument with both ethical reasoning and research.
