Course: ITN 298 – Seminar and Project: Networking Capstone
Artifact Type: Team Leadership and Collaborative Project
Project Context
During my ITN 298 Networking Capstone, my team selected me to serve as team leader for our group project. Our team was responsible for developing a proposed network infrastructure upgrade for a medical office with three locations. Because the project included technical planning, written documentation, and a final presentation, completing it required consistent communication and collaboration among the members of the team.
My Leadership Role
As team leader, I helped organize the group and keep the project moving toward our deadlines. We discussed the project requirements as a team and decided together how the different responsibilities would be divided based on skill. We also used a shared document so that everyone could contribute to the project and see the progress being made in real time.
When portions of the project were not being completed on the timeline we had established, I reached out to team members individually to understand what was preventing them from finishing their work. Rather than simply reminding them that something was due, I offered assistance when needed so that we could resolve problems and continue making progress as a group. This required me to communicate differently depending on the situation while still making sure the team remained focused on completing the project. Balancing my own responsibilities with the responsibility of helping the group stay organized have me experience leading a collaborative technical project form planning through its final presentation.

Skills Demonstrated
Acting as a team leader showed me that leadership does not always mean making every decision for a group. Out team made decisions together, while my responsibility was often making sure communication continued and that problems did not prevent us from meeting our deadlines. Following up individually with team members also showed me the importance of understanding why someone may be falling behind before deciding how to address the situation.
This experience also taught me to balance leadership with being an active member of the team. I still had my own portions of the project to complete while helping coordinate the group’s overall progress. That balance between accountability, collaboration, and communication is something I can carry into future technical teams and professional environments.
