During the second trimester of my internship, I was working on two projects and perfecting my resume every time. During this period, some skills I gained were adaptable skills, time managemen skills , and team work skills.

 

      Firstly,  I had to adapt to my surroundings to improve myself at the beginning of my internship. Adapting to new surroundings is important, for instance, I had to adapt to working from home for my internship during this pandemic season. Not to mention, this skill would help me in the future to be more marketable to employers.

 

     Secondly, there was a surge in the number of coronavirus in the country which led  schools to be closed, and classes to be offered online. I had to manage my time between my internship and other classes. Though, there were days I requested to be off, I realized that the internship is the beginning of my work life, and as such I cannot be absent on regular basis. Although I prioritize my academics, I also make sure my assignments were completed on time.

 

    Thirdly, my internship setting consists of a variety of people. This setting makes the environment a constant factor for teamwork. Learning to work well with different people in a particular setting helps to recognize one’s strengths and weaknesses to help improve themselves. For instance my fellow interns and I were assigned a project to complete by a specific deadline. We were assigned various sections to complete, however we were encouraged to work together. This suggestion helped us in completing the task in a timely manner and received good criticism on our assignments. In addition, the projects my fellow interns and I were working on were health indicators in Franklin county, VA and researching for senior community resources in Chesapeake and Norfolk. The project based on the health indicators in Franklin county was focused on researching for health indicators affecting the county and findng measures to resolve the situation and ways to improve the community health and wellbeing. Likewise, the Franklin county assignment was mostly based on how opioid use factors play a role in the community’s health. Factors such as poverty, peer pressure and a history of family substance abuse were found through research to cause opioid use in the county. However,through research we were able to use scholarly articles to provide measures and programs to help the county decrease its community’s use of opioid. While the community resource project was also based on finding community resources in both Chesapeake and Norfolk to help fellow seniors get more access to resources in their communities. These community resources involved housing , medical, and transportation services to help provide seniors with good lifestyles. Not to mention, I helped find certain services such as faith based organization that offer food pantry and housing services to homeless people and seniors.
