Criminal justice and cybercrime overlap as each practice is related to crime and laws. Depending on schools it is now an elective or requirement to take a course related to cybercrime. Technology is growing at an exponential rate and with that comes an increase in cybercrime. Therefore, it has become exceedingly important for criminal justice professionals to have a background including information technology. Crimes that are punishable by law can occur online in many forms including bullying, extortion, blackmail, threats, defamation, and even intellectual property. The crimes that occur are not only within local, state, or country, but worldwide crossing several lines of jurisdiction. This means not only do local regulations apply but so do international laws as well. These disciplines also overlap with computer science and engineering. It’s now increasingly important for people within the criminal justice discipline to know the innerworkings of computers, phones, and other technology. In many cases evidence is sealed with in these devices or even encrypted and without the data crimes some cases would be impossible to solve.  Criminology is another discipline involved with cybercrime and criminal justice. The study of criminology directly relates to crime and criminals which is something that links the two disciplines together and without crime neither of them would exist. The interconnectedness between the disciplines weaves like a web forever linking the two and many other disciplines together. Overall cybercrime must be investigated and charged by the criminal justice system now more than ever due to the internet of things.
