Hacking Movies – Are they Real? Module 8

For this week’s journal entry, we were given a reaction video to watch and to explain how media has an effect on how individuals view cyber security. After watching the video and reading some of the many comments on the video, I realize that media over glorifies hacking. The hacking shown in the videos is realistically absurd, with a few clicks of a keyboard, a “hacker” can get into a mainframe of some high dollar tech company and steal their information. In the real world, hacking is not nearly as easy as it is shown in the movies. The type of hacking they show is a very small and sped up process of what hackers would typically have to go through to steal information. Although, by showing people that it is easy to hack, these directors are potentially making kids idealize these hackers and then go and try to the hacking themselves. If the media shown would have made the process realistically longer and as boring as it truly is, then maybe it would dissuade future “hackers”.
