Lesson Planning & Instruction
Designing structured, engaging, and standards-based lessons has been a major part of my development as a future educator. Through my coursework, I have created multiple lesson plans that integrate different subject areas, including social studies, math, science, and language arts. These lessons are designed to be interactive and meaningful, allowing students to make connections between what they are learning and real-world concepts.
For example, in my integrated unit plan, People of the Land: Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo, I developed lessons that help students understand how geography and natural resources influence daily life. I used strategies such as read-alouds, group activities, and hands-on learning experiences to keep students engaged and actively involved. I also focused on aligning each lesson with the Virginia Standards of Learning to ensure that instruction is purposeful and goal-oriented.
Being able to plan instruction in this way is essential for my future career as a teacher, as it allows me to create organized, engaging lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners.
Classroom Experience & Student Support
Working directly with students has strengthened my understanding of how to support learning in a real classroom environment. Through my practicum experience in a second-grade classroom and my work as a substitute teacher, I have developed skills in classroom management, student engagement, and adaptability.
During my practicum experience, I observed and participated in daily classroom routines such as morning meetings, structured literacy instruction, and small group activities. These experiences showed me how consistent routines and clear expectations contribute to a positive learning environment. I also had opportunities to work with students one-on-one and in small groups, which helped me better understand how to support different learning needs.
These experiences have prepared me to create a structured and supportive classroom environment where students feel comfortable and can succeed both academically and socially.
Communication & Academic Writing
Clear communication, both written and verbal, has been an important area of growth throughout my coursework. Completing various writing assignments required me to organize ideas, conduct research, and think critically about the topics I was exploring. Over time, this helped me develop stronger communication skills that are essential in both academic and professional settings.
In my writing, I focus on explaining ideas clearly, supporting my thinking with evidence, and organizing information in a way that is easy to follow. This is especially important in education, where communication plays a key role in lesson planning, collaboration with colleagues, and supporting students.
Developing these communication skills will allow me to effectively explain concepts, reflect on my teaching practices, and support students in a clear and organized way in my future classroom.
