“The Need for Technology” Journal #4

According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, all humans have needs that exist on a hierarchical structure, and it is these needs that determine our behavior. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs gives us a clear understanding of how technology is connected to human motivation. Some people may engage with technology for basic comfort. However, I would say that my primary motivation would fall under the safety level; it gives me security, knowing a password protects my phone, just in case it falls into the wrong hands. Validation from others through social media is not a concern for me, as I maintain only one account and could easily disengage from it. I mainly utilize digital technology to achieve my goals, pursue education, and advance my professional growth. In my observation, I have seen how children interact with technology. For example, I have witnessed kids get frustrated when their iPad dies or the WIFI is disconnected. Their reaction is evidence that kids are dependent on technology to meet basic comfort needs. This demonstrates how digital technology can either hinder or motivate you.
