Journal Entry #5

Review the articles linked with each individual motive in slide/page #3.  Rank the motives from 1 to 8 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 8).  Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it.

After reviewing the articles linked, I have come up with a ranking on what motives for cybercrime makes the most sense to me all the way to the least sense. At 1, I believe that money is the motive that makes the most sense to me. My reasoning behind this was because financial gain is consistently the top motivator for cybercrime. From ransomware gangs to cryptocurrency thefts, money is the clearest and most widespread incentive. At 2, I have Political. I believe political motives drive a huge number of state-level cyberattacks and hacktivist movements and they are often high-impact and well-documented. At 3, I have Revenge. Personal revenge, like doxxing or cyberstalking, is a strong motivator. While less global than money/politics, it’s a very real driver at the individual level. At 4, I put Recognition. I ranked this here because many hackers are motivated by wanting status, bragging rights, or recognition in online communities and it’s especially common among younger or less experienced hackers. At 5, I have Curiosity. Curiosity fuels many first-time hackers (script kiddies, young learners). Although it’s common, it usually transitions into another motive (money, recognition) once skills develop. At 6, I have Entertainment. Some hacks are done simply for fun or challenge but compared to money/politics/revenge, this is a less dominant motive. At 7, I have Boredom. Boredom-driven crimes (like trolling or harassment) exist but usually reflect immaturity rather than sophisticated cybercrime and are way less impactful than other motives. Lastly, I ranked Multiple Reason (mixed motives) at 8. While many attacks do combine motives (ex. money + politics, curiosity + recognition), “multiple reasons” is less of a clear standalone motive. It’s more of a category that overlaps with others, so I ranked it last.
