FR 333: French Literary Forms – Poetry

In the FR 333 course, students were to study the literary genre of Poetry by analyzing poems, understanding the form's structure, and writing a thesis in regards to the content of the poem. Below are samples of my best efforts throughout the course.

The goal of the "projet d'anthologie" was to collect poetical artefacts of different francophone nations from the 20th century that spoke about their own individual cultural identity in the francophone world. Some countries saw their French heritage as a remnant of colonialism, while others sought to embrace it in spite of the criticisms of other cultural groups in the country.

The sonnet project was an opportunity to apply the studied structure of a poem into an original sonnet of any topic. The topic chosen spoke to the desire of returning to my country in hopes of living the life I once had before leaving. Coming to the realization that it was a romanticization of the past, but that a new ideal life could be made with realistic expectations and the life I would have wanted.

Ronsard's poem "Quand vous serez vieille - Sonnets pour Hélène" was chosen for the "Explication de texte." The structure of the poem is analyzed by comparing rhyming schemes and sound at the end of every verse, and the identification of lexical groups throughout the artefact.
