Resume Building

When you are in college you might not be thinking about the final resume that you hand out to a future employer. You might not be thinking about an interview with that employer until the day actually comes. With that, you should be thinking about what activities you enjoy and if you can be involved on campus or not. Many employers and graduate schools not only look at your grades but also your resume. A resume is a document that contains all of your valuable skills, experiences, and activities. This can be seen as a story of who you are and what you like without much context. Below are some ways to build up your resume in a fashion that will serve you the best.

  1. For starters you want to have a blank layout of a resume on the computer, from here you will be able to see the holes in your resume and the parts that still need some work to be done. Many resumes have a few sections to them: skills, education, jobs/experience. and more. These will help your future employer to be able to see each entry in a category relative to the importance.
  2. Once you develop this skeleton of a resume, you then want to add in the activities that you have done into their respective locations. If you find that you do not have much experience shadowing or interning with a future job then you would want to make it a goal to work on that specific category.
  3. For the references section you should put down at least three people that can serve a good outlook to a future employer or graduate school to reflect on your character and accountability both in and out of the classroom.
  4. Finally, you will want to turn in your resume to someone to review it, and for them to actually provide valuable feedback for how you appear from an outside perspective. This allows you to be prepared and fully show off who you are and what you are capable of.

Creating a resume may only be the first step, you should also do research on how to create an effective resume and different resume hacks. This helps a lot especially when you are trying your best to land your dream job. All in all, being prepared and ready to enhance yourself to the maximum way possible is the best way to go about creating a resume, this is the best way to find out certain aspects that are missing and allowing yourself to have time to fill in those gaps rather than reflecting back and finding a hole. This is the way that works for me so I am able to see the different holes in my own resume!
