Week 4 Journal Entry

Review Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and explain how each level relates to your experiences with technology. Give specific examples of how your digital experiences relate to each level of need.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a model used for understanding human behavior. It suggests all people are motivated by fulfilling these needs from the bottom of the chart to the top. In my own life all these needs interact daily with technology in some way.  It seems inevitable in the 21st century. Entire services can be found online catering to each level of the chart.

For Basic needs (Physiological and safety), I use many food delivery apps and summon food directly to my door within the hour. I found the house I live in on a website devoted to selling and purchasing houses. Should my home ever come under threat, my home security system connects directly to both the fire department and police services using technology.

For Psychological needs, (Belongingness and esteem), for the first few months of our dating my wife and I were on different continents. We used technology to communicate and grow our relationship. We coordinate with friends and family daily using social media and messaging apps. Posting and sharing our accomplishments and life.

For Self-fulfillment/self-actualization needs, I am taking university courses online, so that I might get a job working remotely. Using technology, I can interact with the world, communicate, earn a living, educate myself, have access near endless goods and services, and find a place in the world. Technology is a cornerstone in my life and the lives of millions.
