Don’t Be the Weakest Link: Learning from a Sport Industry Professional
Through this assignment, I had the opportunity to learn more about a sport professional, Ryan Parncutt, and gain insight into what it takes to succeed in the sports industry. By researching her background and career journey, I was able to better understand how experience, networking, and consistency all play a major role in building a career in athletics.
Ryan Parncutt’s path is a strong example of how student involvement can turn into a full-time career. As a former student-athlete on the Old Dominion women’s soccer team, she was able to develop leadership skills both on and off the field. During her time at ODU, she also served as a Student Director of Community Engagement, which allowed her to gain valuable experience working with others and organizing initiatives within athletics.
After graduating from Old Dominion University with a degree in Career and Technical Education, she continued her education by pursuing a Master’s degree in Sport Management. At the same time, she began her professional career in athletics as a Marketing and Fan Engagement Coordinator in 2023. Through hard work and persistence, she quickly advanced into her current role as Director of Athletics Marketing and Social Media.
In her current position, Ryan Parncutt is responsible for managing social media platforms, promoting games and events, and creating marketing strategies that increase fan engagement. Her role highlights how important communication, creativity, and organization are in the sports industry, especially when it comes to connecting with fans and enhancing the overall game-day experience.
One of the biggest takeaways from learning about her career is how important networking is, especially through platforms like LinkedIn. Building relationships and staying connected can open doors to new opportunities. In addition, gaining hands-on experience early—whether through athletics, internships, or campus involvement—is essential in such a competitive field.
Overall, this project helped me better understand what it takes to be successful in sports and how I can apply these lessons to my own career. This is especially relevant to my experience working with Old Dominion women’s basketball, where I continue to develop skills that will help me in the future. Ryan Parncutt’s journey shows that success does not happen overnight, but instead comes from staying consistent, working hard, and taking advantage of every opportunity.
