Journal Entry 6

Through the exploration of online security, I came across the fact that fraudulent websites often look to mirror authentic websites to mislead users into thinking their websites are genuine or to steal sensitive information. Phishing sites, which may even channel users to a site such as paypa1.com, where it imitates the legitimate site and accompanying design, or sites created as fake news outlets that mirror credible news sites such as Le Monde or Brut, complete with fabricated articles about Ensure FBI impersonation websites that look equivalent to the IC3 website in their design to gather sensitive personal information. In each case, the fraudulent sites used only slightly altered addresses, fake or inconsistent branding, or low-quality content, even though they were using HTTPS. In fact, a site using HTTPS should indeed give you a clearer sense of security, as it validates the legitimacy of the domain’s ownership and the security level of the hosting site.

In just a few comparisons with the legitimate site’s key characteristics, you should easily recognize the differences between the two; trustworthy sites also have consistent domain names, a reliable professional design, verified SSL certificates, quality accurate content, and pertinently related links. When you notice these differences, the other site is certainly fraudulent. Being aware of these site features makes it easier for you to introduce an element of awareness, which is so important in helping to identify fraud.
