Maslow’s needs can very easily appear to intersect with technology in my life experiences. At their basic levels, technology satisfies the physiological needs of security of life, such as food delivery on-the-go kind of applications, fitness tracking, or sleep monitoring, and ensuring a person’s health. At the safety level, I keep my gadgets and information safe with strong passwords, antivirus software, and firewalls; I go on with two-factor authentication for my devices. At the love-and-belonging level, social media, video calling platforms, and group chats help me maintain my bonds with friends, families, and communities. When I feel accomplished in an online course, compelled to earn digital certificates, or am gratified by positive feedback on a post, an online “like,” or a comment, I feel esteem needs. At the last level of self-actualization, technology is used to learn new skills, practice coding, express creativity, and share the final project with others. In summary, technology will play a significant role at each level of the hierarchy of needs.
