CYSE 201S- Journal Entry #14

Q: Review what the author says and write a paragraph describing the five most serious violations and why you think those offenses are serious.

A: From the following 11 illegal things that people on the internet may unknowingly do online, the five that strike me as the five most serious violations are the following: using torrent services, bullying and trolling, faking your identity online, using other people’s internet networks, and illegal searches on the internet. While using unofficial streaming services and using copyrighted images are bad in their own right, using torrent services is both unethical and extremely illegal as you gain access to various forms of digital media completely for free. Bullying and trolling is extremely dangerous not just for the bully/troll, due to the consequences that alone faces by the law, but the victims who can be both digitally and emotionally damaged permanently, and can lead to destructive consequences as an outcome. Faking your identity not only counts as a form of identity fraud, but can also be very destructive if used to commit social engineering attacks online, such as phishing. Using other people’s internet networks, similar to torrent services, is both unethical for the person who’s paying for the service and illegal for using the service that the individual paid for, in addition to having the ability to potentially spy on the network and leak the individual’s privacy. Lastly, it should go unsaid, but either unintentionally searching up or intentionally looking something up that is illegal on the internet is a very serious violation that can get law enforcement to perform full-on investigations if not careful, with illegal searches including child pornography, hiring criminals such as assassins, dangerous searches such as bomb making, and even more. Simply put, these are all extremely serious and dangerous web searches that can easily get a person investigated and potentially face consequences by the law; in other words, think before you search and if you ever consider any of these five or even the 11 different internet violations, simply don’t.
