Why are you interested in cybersecurity technology?
When I came to Old Dominion University, I was not really sure what I wanted to do. As a freshman, I came in majoring in psychology. I thought that being a psychologist or a school guidance counselor was what I wanted to do post-college. I soon learned that psychology was too broad, and my career goals required a lot more than just a psychology degree. While completing the major, I grew interested in criminology and criminal justice. Shows like NCIS, Law, and Order: SVU, and 911 were not only my favorite shows, but they motivated me and shifted my interest to criminal justice and the law. Old Dominion offers a Cyber-Crime Inter-Disciplinary Studies major. This major allows you to study both cybersecurity and criminal justice and how they can work hand in hand in the real world. I decided to double major and shift my learning and explore a new topic. When you think about the concept of cyber-crime, you think of hacking, cyberbullying, and child pornography. All of these categories are crimes that occur online, hence the word cyber. Since I want to pursue a career in the cyber-crimes field, it is important that I learn about both cybersecurity and criminal justice. I must learn about different information systems and programs, as well as coding, in order to understand the cyber language. For example, learning about cybersecurity technology will allow me to be familiar with codes and raise the odds of tracking down hackers in order to bring justice to anyone affected by the hacker’s actions. By taking this class, I hope to learn about the different information systems and familiarize myself more with the technical aspects of the online world. I have high hopes that this cybersecurity, technology, and societal class will be very interesting, yet full of information so that I will learn and retain information that will be beneficial in real-world experiences in the near future.
