How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
Cyber deviance refers to inappropriate or criminal behavior in a digital context but it goes ways beyond that. Deviance can be anything from cyberbullying, harassment, or exploring the internet for personal reasons. One of the most important aspects to discuss is why cyber-deviance takes place. While there are a large number of reasons, some of the top reasons start with personal and cultural factors. Most cyber deviants lack self-discipline. It is also found that most of the deviant behavior happens within the workplace and can cause deviants to lose their jobs. We do find that those who lost their jobs are those who try to release companies’ information as a way to retaliate against previous situations. While there has been a lot of actions, awareness, and teaching about cyber-deviance including the consequence that happens if you participate in deviance, there still seems to be an ongoing issue. While we still learn and study the causes of cyber deviance, experts have found the most common and reoccurring types of deviance. Property deviance, political deviance, and production deviance turn out to be a few of the most common kinds. Property deviance can be using company accessories such as a company car or company credit card for nonwork-related activities. Then we have political deviance. This can be gossiping on Facebook about another co-worker or competing nonbeneficially at work. Lastly, we have production deviance which could be coming to work late and taking sick days when not actually sick. When people do not get personal value or rewards from things they may turn to deviance because they often can get away with their actions. Another reason behind deviance could be the lack of assertive leadership in the workplace. If the supervisors are not being assertive and holding employees accountable for their actions then deviance can persist. A good this is that as technology evolves, the government is constantly implementing strong laws to help combat cyber deviance and cyber crimes as a whole.
