Old Dominion University takes Research Integrity, including scientific misconduct, very seriously. This site is a place where you can find important information about ODU policies on Research Integrity and Scientific Misconduct.  By being aware of the policies and procedures you can hopefully avoid any of the pitfalls.

Science, often funded with public money, drives the advancement of knowledge.  Unethical research leads to a loss of public trust, the waste of valuable research funds, and potentially harm to someone or the environment; society suffers. When misconduct is committed it can take years to identify and correct, putting more at risk and requiring more public funds.

National Science Foundation policy requires “each institution that applies for financial assistance from the Foundation for science and engineering research or education describe in its grant proposal a plan to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research to undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers participating in the proposed research project.”   It is the institutions responsibility for verifying that undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers [in addition to PI] supported by NSF to conduct research have received training in the responsible and ethical conduct of research.

National Institutes of Health policy requires every NIH-supported trainee to receive instruction in the responsible conduct of research. All NIH research training programs are required to consider including instruction in the following areas: conflict of interest, responsible authorship, policies for handling misconduct, data management, data sharing, and policies regarding the use of human and animal subjects.
