Explain how the principles of science relate to cybersecurity.
Starting with relativism, it means that all things are related to each other one way or another. The way this connects with cybersecurity, could be with schools, healthcare systems, and simply the life of people. Cybersecurity helps protect school systems from hackers or malicious malware, helps keep records from hospitals safe, and help protect the privacy and daily life of people with their important information and passwords/logins. Objectivity simply refers to topics being studied in a value-free matter, with different perspectives. This correlates with cybersecurity by helping the justice system ask questions on how they should punish different types of criminals, one of them being hackers and exploits, along with how other criminals use the internet to get away with their crimes. Parsimony means to keep explanation as simple as possible, the “self-control theory” comes into play, in which individuals will commit a crime simply because they have low self-control, meaning some people may break cybersecurity rules to get a certain item or piece of information that was too tempting to not get.
Empiricism means that behavior can only be studied with what is real to the senses. Empiricism knows why a hacker might hack but they won’t be able to understand why they made the decision. Ethical neutrality is based on scientists or researchers staying within a conduct and ethical standards while doing their research, meaning they have to protect the rights of the individuals being studied. Therefore a connection would be if should the data about students’ performance in prior schools or classrooms be used to give them access to other types of classes or colleges? Determinism is the principle of behavior being caused, determined, or influenced by preceding events, or the result of “free-will” in individuals. An example would be why do individuals (choose to?) ignore cybersecurity classes or warnings. Skepticism is that everything claimed should be questioned and examined rather than just accepted the way it is, an example to cybersecurity would be “how effective are awareness campaigns against phishing and social engineering attacks”.
