CYSE 406

Cyber Law

In this class, I was able to gain a broad knowledge of constitutional, civil, criminal, and related legal considerations that arise within the context of work or citizenship in an increasingly cyber/digital world. Also, I gained insight into both the limits and authorities on government or private sector activities, from the creation and protection of intellectual property, to the investigation of unlawful cyber activities, to the considerations of cyber operations in an increasingly dangerous world.

Course Material

In this course, I completed numerous assignments. One that stood out to me was our second writing assignment which was a paper that we had to do where we identified a new or proposed law that we found interesting. Therefore, I chose the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) of 2018. In this paper, I summarized the law and what it was intended to accomplish. Also, I assessed its value and explained why this law would improve cybersecurity and meet its intended purpose.

This assignment allowed me to understand how much information businesses are collecting from us including our private information. However, the California Consumer Privacy Act seeks to protect consumers and make them aware of their rights to opt out of giving away their personal information if they so choose. This law gained attention from other states by making them want to create a similar law protecting their citizens. This assignment allowed me to improve my research skills as I had never heard of this law before and had to learn about it through credible sources.

In the assignment, the paper was written in the form of a letter in which I had to persuade a representative to consider this law as a way to get voters to better understand the risks and threats of cybersecurity along with help strengthen it. I explained what the CCPA is and how it would be beneficial to voters.
