Oral Presentation Including Nursing Research
Pediatric Grand Rounds Presentation
NURS 421: Clinical Management of Children of the Family
Purpose of the Assignment: To provide the student an opportunity to integrate knowledge from the sciences, developmental theory, and physical assessment data to the care of a pediatric patient and family in the acute care setting. The student will utilize critical thinking and independent judgments in presenting a holistic plan of care in a formal oral presentation
Student Approach to Assignment: I approached this assignment by assessing and integrating knowledge to care for a pediatric patient. Within this presentation, I identified physical assessment findings, priority patient problems, and research articles applicable to the patient to present a holistic plan of care for the pediatric patient.
Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: The inclusion of this assignment in the portfolio is important because it showcases my ability to identify patient problems and provide holistic patient-centered nursing care. It highlights my ability to integrate research into nursing practice and demonstrates my ability to thoroughly create a plan of care.
- Domains 1, 2, 3: Knowledge for Nursing Practice, Person-Centered Care, Population Health
- (7) Demonstrates clinical reasoning in making clinical or professional judgments.
- In this assignment, I demonstrated clinical reasoning in making clinical judgment by appropriately selecting interventions based on the patient’s presentation. I identified priorities for the patient such as airway and neurological instability to create/identify the patients problem list and provide interventions that supported my clinical judgement.
- (7) Demonstrates clinical reasoning in making clinical or professional judgments.
- Domains 2, 3, 5: Person-Centered Care, Population Health, Quality and Safety
- (11) Performs therapeutic interventions that incorporate principles of quality management and proper safety techniques
- In this assignment, I identified therapeutic interventions such as airway suctioning, having emergency airway equipment at bedside, continuous vital sign monitoring for neurological safety, atraumatic care, and properly maintaining patient skin integrity.
- (11) Performs therapeutic interventions that incorporate principles of quality management and proper safety techniques
- Domain 4: Scholrship for the Nursing Discipline
- (26) Applies research-based knowledge from the arts, humanities, and sciences to complement nursing practice
- I identified and applied well-known research to support the importance of tracheostomy sizes in pediatric patients and thoroughly explained the patients neurological condition. I explained the importance of speaking directly to the patient and prioritizing patient dignity.
- (26) Applies research-based knowledge from the arts, humanities, and sciences to complement nursing practice
- Domain 6: Interprofessional Partnerships
- (32) Adhere to the registered nurse scope and standard of practice
- In this assignment, I demonstrated the ability to perform a comprehensive patient assessment, identify patient priority problems, perform interactions, use clinical judgement, and implement a plan of care for the patient which are all a part of the registered nurse scope of standard practice.
- (32) Adhere to the registered nurse scope and standard of practice
