Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to enable the student to rediscover his or her personal philosophy of nursing as it exists upon the completion of the baccalaureate nursing program.

This project provides the student with an opportunity to define his/her philosophy of nursing inthe early phases of education and professionalization. In the spirit of life-long learning inherent to the practice of nursing, the student will also explore and describe his/her goals for higher level nursing education. As required for the Senior year portfolio, the student can use this project to look back and reflect upon the values, understandings, ambiguities, and personal experiences that have changed or held steadfast throughout his/her undergraduate nursing education and their
influence on the transition to the professional nurse role.

Student Approach to Assignment: I approached this assignment by comparing my baseline philosophy, values, and beliefs and comparing it to the values that I now obtain.  During completion of this assignment, I was able to identify and explain my personal philosophy for nursing. This assignment helped me further understand my personal career goals in nursing and determine the fundamentals of nursing that are important to me. It also helped me identify areas in which I would like to continue to build upon and expand my knowledge. I learned the importance of applying my knowledge to nursing theories and expanding my personal philosophy based on principles I have been inspired by.

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: The inclusion of this assignment in the portfolio is important because it showcases my values and principles, and explains how I plan to guide my practice and implement these beliefs as a nurse.
