NURS 480: Leadership

Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to describe a nursing or patient care concern that needs improvement and analyze the significance of the concern for nursing practice in relation to the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competences.

Student Approach to Assignment: I approached this assignment by identifying a nursing care concern that I have recognized during clinical practice. I identified an issue related to patient-centered care and cultural competence among healthcare professionals. I then identified ways that I would improve practices in my work environment. 

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: The inclusion of this assignment in the portfolio is important because it demonstrates my ability to identify nursing concerns in the healthcare setting and provide examples on how I can contribute to improving those practices. As a nurse, I will identify many concerns as I am caring for patients, and it will be my responsibility to improve them and provide optimal patient care. 

  • Domains 2 and 3: Person-Centered Care, Population Health
    • (10) Demonstrates an awareness of cultural preferences and complementary modalities and their usefulness in promoting health.
      • In this assignment, I demonstrated awareness of cultural preferences such as providing privacy for the patient’s mom, identifying language barriers, and emphasizing the importance of providing cultural competence care. These can be used directly to promote health for the patient. 
  • Domains  2 and 7: Person-Centered Care, Systems-Based Practice
    • (19) Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care procedures and technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical interventions.
      • This was demonstrated by educating the parents/patients on the medical interventions that would be performed by using a translator. I also address the importance of discharge teaching and how important it is for the patient/family to understand the teaching provided. 
  • Domain 4: Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline
    • (25) Applies research-based knowledge from nursing as the basis for culturally sensitive practice.
      • I used research-based knowledge as the basis for culturally sensitive practice by applying research that supports improving cultural competence. These cultural sensitive practices include providing additional training to nurses that include breaking language barriers and providing cultural competent care. 
  • Domains 5 and 6: Quality and Safety, Interprofessional Partnerships
    • (17) Articulate the nurse’s role as a member of the interprofessional team in promoting safety and preventing errors and near misses.
      • I explained the importance of language barriers and how the nurse can prevent errors and promote safety by ensuring the patient understands discharge teaching material to prevent readmission and the risks of harm if the patient/family doesn’t understand discharge material due to language barriers. 
  • Domain 8: Informatics and Healthcare Technologies
    • (40) Use evidence-based patient teaching materials, considering health literacy, vision, hearing, and cultural sensitivity.
      • I considered the patient’s health literacy level by identifying that the patient would not understand teaching materials and instead directing teaching material to the parents.I utilized evidence-based teaching materials considering cultural sensitivity by utilizing an interpreter to educate the parents using the teach-back method.
