NURS 472: Community Health

Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to allow the student the opportunity to complete an analysis of a public health issue from a social justice perspective.

Student Approach to Assignment: I approached this assignment by researching public health issues that are currently affecting communities. I was able to gather data and information to identify the issue from a social justice perspective, and analyze why it is a public health issue. I used theories, statistics, and social determinants of health to support the public health issue chosen. During this assignment, I learned the importance of identifying social justice issues and using evidence to support my claims and to bring awareness to mental health disparities among minorities.

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: The inclusion in my portfolio for this assignment is important because it showcases my ability to identify systemic and social factors that have an effect on the outcomes of the public. This assignment also demonstrates evidence-based practice, patient advocacy, and an understanding of public health disparities.  As a nurse, it will be important to understand and be able to identify outside factors that affect patient outcomes, and also to find ways to support them. 

• Domain 1:
  • (2) Demonstrate social responsibility as a global citizen who fosters the attainment of health equity for all.
    • This was demonstrated in the assignment by identifying systematic inequities such as race and acces to care, and advocating for change to help patients in minority populations with mental health disparities.
• Domain 2: Person-Centered Care
  • (9) Implements nursing care practices as appropriate to provide holistic health care to diverse populations across the lifespan.
    • In this assignment, I identified specific minority groups and analyzed the stigma and discrimination among the individuals. Throughout the paper, holistic and compassionate care are emphasized, which supports the principles of person-centered care.
• Domain 3: Population Health
  • (21) Assess the priorities of the community and/or the affected clinical population.
    • In this assignment, I identified a widespread public health issue towards a specific population group. I chose to analyze the population group and the mental health disparities amongst minorities (mostly African Americans and Hispanics). Also, I was able to address access to care which has become an issue for many patients across the country. 
• Domain 4:
  • (28) Communicates scholarly findings with colleagues.
    • This was demonstrated by utilzing research and scholarly sources to demonstrate the ability to conduct an argument on a social justice issue and communicate scholarly findings effectively.
• Domains 4 and 7:
  • (37) Considers the impact of research outcomes and the effects of health and social policies, on persons from diverse backgrounds.
    • I explicited stated policy effects and how they affect minority groups and discuss research outcomes (Medicaid cuts and insurance disparities) based on researh provided. It is important to understand how research outcomes impact social and health policies in society.
• Domain 9: Professionalism
  • (42) Advocates for professional standards of practice using organizational and political processes.
    • In this assignment, I was able to identify the importance of patient advocacy, identification of ethical principles, and accountability as a nurse. I demonstrated advocacy by bringing awareness and finding ways to fix mental health disparities in minority populations.
