The theory of Marxism I decided to showcase was from Christina Rossetti’s short story, “The Goblin Market”. I learned that Marxism claims that the class barriers between the haves and the have nots are what is most detrimental to society as a whole and is the cause of all the -isms in the world i.e. racism, sexism, consumerism, capitalism, etc. I chose this text because the story describes different ways how the hierarchal structure is not only destroying the lives of the lower class, but is also stimulating the very structure of living: economy and culture. If I were to improve my essay for this theory I would have gone more in depth about the interdependence between the proletariat (lower class) and the bourgeoisie (the rich benefactors).
