The Developmental CV

2

For many doctoral students, the developmental CV can serve as a starting point for their X-year plan (Note: I generally recommend a 5-year plan for doctoral plan, because it allows you to focus on short-term goals, plan for medium-term goals, and develop stepping stones for longer-term goals. http://sites.wp.odu.edu/careerpathways/wp-content/uploads/sites/4223/2017/02/CV-template.pdf

Step 1: Create a draft CV with ALL relevant headings (Note: Consider using the template below).

Step 2: Use blank sections as placeholders.

Step 3: Determine gaps and identify activities to fill these gaps. (Note: Be strategic. Consider activities that can help you simultaneously address multiple gaps).

Look at the sample developmental CV below. This is my development CV from when I was a doctoral student in 2006.
Note that some of the sections are blank or bare. This is normal for an early-stage doctoral student.
Also, pay closer attention to the comments and plans to see my approach to filling in/populating the CV.
