NURS 481 Principles of Role Transition
In this course I was assigned to Sentara Virginia Beach General Cardiac Care Unit and Sentara Albemarle Medical Surgical floor. I worked side by side with my preceptors to learn and truly take on the roles of a nurse. I was allowed and supervised as I passed medications and performed all the tasks that a nurse has to do on a 12 hour shift. I worked both nights and days and performed 180 hours clinical hours. I learned how to become confident in my decision making and critical thinking skills as I worked with each patient. I learned how to better spot signs of a patient declining and improving, and what that meant for my next interventions. As I worked along side these nurses I learned how impactful a nurse really is. Besides a few other healthcare professionals such as CNAs and techs we are with the patient the most. We are the first line of detecting when something is going wrong. Our judgement is just as important as the rest of the medical professionals who prescribe their meds and perform procedures. As nurses we are more than just med passers. We are there to help our patients physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We are the leaders that they entrust with their care. We are there to advocate for them and to give our all into providing them the best possible outcome they can have. It is our job to be by there side to be able to care for their needs. As much as we are there medically to assess and treat, we are also there to be the strong person for them to lean on. We educate and guide so that they can make decisions on their health and goals. We take into consideration not just the physical body and diagnosis in front of us, but also who they are as a person outside of the hospital. A person can get better in the hospital, but it is our goal for them to thrive outside as well and that is why we have holistic care. We make sure that we address all needs to the best of our ability so that they have the best outcome both in the hospital and outside of it.
Work Sample- due to HIPAA I cannot “show” proof, however, you can see my Professional Progress Summary Paper to learn more about my internship and other internships I was apart of.
