Position Paper

Position Assignment on a Health Issue Intro Page

Purpose of the Assignment: To examine a controversial or politically or publicly debated women’s health, obstetric or neonatal issue and present both sides equally.

Student Approach to Assignment: I approached this assignment by using unbiased research in hopes of truly understanding and learning the viewpoints of both sides of an argument. I chose to do my paper on birth control and why some people are for it while others are against it.

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: The reason for including this assignment in my portfolio is because it is a topic that is something I dealt with growing up. In the Catholic faith we are told not to use birth control as it takes away from the natural purpose of life. Doing this paper allowed me to learn more about both sides of the argument. This is something we as nurses must do often. It is important that we can learn the facts before making our own decision and that we can learn to understand our patients even when their opinion may be different from ours.

Domain 2: Person-Centered Care

  • End of Program Outcome 9: Implements nursing care practices as appropriate to provide holistic health care to diverse populations across the lifespan.
    • In this paper we see that birth control is used for all ages for all different reasons. It provides different care to different patients and has many therapeutic uses.
  • End of Program Outcome 10: Demonstrates an awareness of cultural preferences and complementary modalities and their usefulness in promoting health.
    • In this paper we see that there are cultural preferences such as religion that make it to where some patients do not want to use birth control. This is why it is important for us as nurses to recognize that and give alternatives such as abstinence if the patient is using birth control to prevent conception.

Domain 3: Population Health Descriptor

  • End of Program Outcome 25: Applies research-based knowledge from nursing as the basis for culturally sensitive practice.
    • In this paper I used research-based knowledge to learn and discuss the nature of culturally sensitive practice. In this case the paper discussed birth control and how it can be sensitive to certain cultures as it goes against their beliefs.
