Philosophy Intro Page

Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to enable the student to

rediscover his or her personal philosophy of nursing as it exists upon the completion of the

baccalaureate nursing program.

Student Approach to Assignment: While completing this assignment I had a chance to reflect on my growth and development throughout my time in the program. I got to see how much I learned not only from my experiences in clinical, but also being around seasoned nurses as well as my fellow classmates. Through every piece of knowledge I gained I was shaped into the nurse I will become and so too has my philosophy been shaped.

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: It is imperative to add a philosophy paper to my portfolio so that I can address all end of course program outcomes. It is a representation of my dedication to the fair and adequate treatment of all my patients. Showing passion and care I wish to put into and give to every patient and case no matter who the person or their background. It is my responsibility both as a nurse, but through my own moral compass that I am giving each and every patient the best care they can receive so that they have the best chance of having a profitable outcome.

Domain 1: Knowledge for Nursing Practice

  • End of Program Outcome 1: Identify concepts, derived from theories from nursing and other disciplines, which distinguish the practice of nursing.
  • In this paper, I have referenced two different theorists. I discussed Florence Nightingale and Jean Watson. Their theories of Environmental Theory and Theory of Human Caring have helped to shape my philosophy by helping me to focus on my patient as a whole and the environment they come from; in order to best care for them.
  • End of Program Outcome 2: Demonstrate social responsibility as a global citizen who fosters the attainment of health equity for all.
    • In this paper, I discussed how it is my responsibility as a nurse to treat every patient the same. It is also my responsibility as a nurse to advocate for my patients to all receive the care that they deserve. Every patient is there own person with their own needs that while treating I need to keep in mind.
  • End of Program Outcome 3: Articulates an understanding of how human behavior is affected by culture, race, religion, gender, lifestyle, and age
    • In this paper, I discussed how a patient is more than just the person who sits in front of us. They have many layers that decide their needs both in the hospital and outside. As nurses it is our responsibility to help our patients meet their needs such as finding a home, having access to the medication they need, or making sure they are provided equal care to those who are around them.

Domain 5: Quality and Safety

  • End of Program Outcome 16: Identify sources and applications of national safety and quality standards and hospital standards of practice to guide nursing practice.
    • In this paper, I discussed that patients have rights that we as nurses have to respect. These are standard in every hospital. It is our job as a nurse to honor and respect our patient’s rights. Just as we take that oath to do no harm to our patients. It is up to us to follow all safety and quality standards and protocols.

Domain 6: Interprofessional Partnerships

  • End of Program Outcome 31: Articulates the values of the profession and the role of the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team.
    • In this paper, I discussed how a nurse plays a vital role in the interdisciplinary team. We are the go between our patients and many of the other healthcare professionals. Due to us playing such a huge role, we are responsible and called on to advocate for our patients to the best of our ability.

Domain 10: Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development

  • End of Program Outcome 33: Explores personal philosophy of nursing and educational goals at the beginning and end of the program.
    • In this paper, I discussed my philosophy of nursing and what it means to me. I explained how through this program it has evolved and has been shaped through my experiences at clinicals and by those who I have learned from.
  • End of Program Outcome 43: Demonstrates accountability for one’s own professional practice.
    • In this paper, I discussed how as a nurse it is my responsibility to respect my patients, to do no harm, and to provide the best possible care for each of my patients. As a nurse we take an oath and we hold a license. It is our job to protect and serve and if we don’t, we are subject to having our license and/or job stripped of us. It is up to nobody else but us to protect our license and job.
