Ethical Issues Concept Map Intro Page
Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student with an opportunity to analyze an ethical issue in healthcare. An ethical decision-making model will be used along with application of ethical principles and the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses.
Student Approach to Assignment: My approach to this assignment was to take a real-world ethical issue that I faced during clinicals and dissect it. I researched all the outcomes and legal processes that go into ethical dilemmas in the nursing field and how best we can face them as nurses.
Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: I included this in my portfolio because it is important as nurses that we know how to face these ethical issues. They may not always happen, but when they do it is our job to be able to handle them professionally and legally.
Domain 4: Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline
- End of Program Outcome 26: Applies research-based knowledge from the arts, humanities, and sciences to complement nursing practice.
- In this assignment you will notice that I got information from many relevant sources that come from different backgrounds. There is more than just nursing that goes into our practice. There are also ethics, art, and humanities. I connected each of these areas together in my concept map.
Domain 7: Systems-Based Practice
- End of Program Outcome 32: Adhere to the registered nurse scope and standard of practice
- In this assignment you will notice that it talks about what the nurse can and cannot do. It is important that we stay within our scope of practice. We can educate our patients and advocate for our patients, but we cannot tell family what to do. It has to be their educated decision.
- End of Program Outcome 36: Understands the effect of legal and regulatory processes on nursing practice and health care delivery.
- In this assignment you will see how I talk about the legal process and how it comes into play. For this specific assignment we see how the ethics committee comes into play before the legal process can be started.
