Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity

The Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity at Old Dominion University (ODU) “oversees, facilitates and supports the University’s efforts to ensure equal opportunity for all persons regardless of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex (including pregnancy), political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, disability, religion, or veteran status in employment, educational programs and activities, and admissions” (Institutional Equity and Diversity Website).

History

In 1973, Old Dominion created the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action with A. Rufus Tonelson as the first Affirmative Action officer. In July 1977, Dr. Maggi Curry-Williams was named director and held the position for until 1982 when Ruth Jones became the second director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action. In 1999, ReNee Dunman was named the new director. In 2008, the office changed its name to the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity to better reflect all the functions and services of the office and Dunman received the new title of Assistant Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity in 2009.
