History
Distance learning has been a part of the curriculum at ODU as far back as 1931, when the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary partnered with Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) to offer the first two years of their engineering program in Norfolk. By the early 1950s, the Norfolk Division began to teach classes through the use of televisions through partnerships with local stations. By the 1990s, ODU had created three off-site higher education centers in Hampton, Virginia (ODU Peninsula Center), Virginia Beach, Virginia (ODU Virginia Beach Center), and Suffolk, Virginia (ODU Tri-Cities Center). In 1994, ODU launched the innovation TELETECHNET program, which made use of satellites to teach courses throughout the Commonwealth and beyond. The Ships at Sea program, established in 1997, even taught classes on the U.S.S. George Washington for active duty sailors of the U.S. Navy. By 2014, with the elimination of the satelites, these distance learning courses were taught through ODUOnline. In July 2022, the Division of Digital Learning was created, and ODUOnline was renamed ODU Global. As of July 1, 2024, with the merger of ODU and Eastern State Medical School (EVMS), the Division of Digital Learning and the Office of Information Technology Services merged to create the new Division of Digital Transformation and Technology.
