Public Administration

Urban Studies and Public Administration Class, 1980s

The Master of Public Administration is one of the degree programs in the School of Public Service, located in the Strome College of Business. The program is for those that have in interest in working in government and non-profit agencies. The degree currently consists of 39 credit hours.

History

1958 June: The first Certificate in Public Administration was awarded. The program was a joint effort between the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary and the Naval Supply Center

1973: The School of Business Administration offered a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) with an emphasis in public administration

1974 Fall: The Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) was first offered and had approximately 60 students its first year

1975 May: The first M.P.A degrees were conferred at Commencement

1975 July: The Master of Urban Studies and M.P.A. programs were combined, along with the Center for Urban Research and Service, to establish the Institute of Urban Studies and Public Administration. The Institute, which reported to the Dean of Graduate Studies, administered the Urban Studies and Public Administration programs. Some of the professors that taught in the Institute of Urban Studies and Public Administration include:

  • Gary C. Durden: Associate Dean of the School of Business

  • Max B. Jones: Business Management
  • Harvey B. Karp: Business Management
  • Jack Weldon Nickson: Economics
  • Yearn Choi: Political Science
  • John Bennett: Political Science
  • Manindra Kumar Mohapatra: Political Science
  • John Ramsay: Political Science

1976-1981: The Institute reports to the Dean of Arts and Letters

1981-1986: The Institute is dissolved and the Urban Studies and Public Administration Department is established under the Dean of Arts and Letters

1986-1995: The Urban Studies and Public Administration Department is established under the Dean of College of Business and Public Affairs

1995-1997: Renamed Economics and Urban Studies and Public Administration Department

1997-2004: Renamed Graduate Center for Urban Studies and Public Administration

2004-2015: Renamed Urban Studies and Public Administration Department

2014: Board of Visitors renamed the college: Strome College of Business

2015-present: Reorganized Public Administration program into the newly established School for Public Service
