James L. Bugg, Jr. Plaza

The James L. Bugg, Jr. Plaza, is the student common/courtyard area between the Batten Arts and Letters Building (BAL) and the Patricia W. and J. Douglas Perry Library on the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU). The Virginia Beach Monarch Memorial sits at the end of the plaza. Bugg Plaza was named after James L. Bugg, Jr., president of ODU from 1969 to 1976.

History

The ODU Board of Visitors designated the courtyard adjacent to BAL the James L. Bugg, Jr. Plaza at its September 14, 1995 meeting. The Virginia Beach Monarch Memorial broke ground on the plaza in 2019 and was completed in the spring of 2021.
