Patricia W. and J. Douglas Perry Library

Perry Library, 1997

The Patricia W. and J. Douglas Perry Library, or familiarly Perry Library, is the main library on the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU). It is located off 43rd Street between Albert Brooks Gornto, Jr. Hall and the 43rd Street Parking Garage.

History

By the early 1970s, the Hughes Library was running out of space to house all the books and resources needed to sustained the newly created Old Dominion University and a new building was needed. The New Library Building opened in 1976 but by 1981 had reached capacity. A 76,000 square-foot addition to Perry Library was completed in 1998 and dedicated in April 1999 as the Patricia W. and J. Douglas Perry Library in honor of Patricia Perry, class of 1989, and her husband Douglas Perry, co-founder of Dollar Tree. The Learning Commons @ Perry Library was completed in 2011 and offers collaboration rooms, research assistance and equipment loans, computers, courses and workshops, and academic tutoring for students. The Student Success Center, which is attached to Perry Library, opened in 2011 to consolidate all the tools a student needs to excel at ODU including tutoring, mentoring, advising, and counseling. A collaboration between Academic Affairs and Student Engagement and Enrollment Services (SEES), the Student Success Center offers services such as the Finish in 4, Sophomore Success, and Preparing Future Faculty programs.
