Accessibility

We endeavor to make our conference more accessible every year, and we ask that presenters make their presentations as accessible as possible to a wide range of bodies and minds. Presenters may consider passing out access scripts of their talks, describing the images in their PowerPoint presentations aloud, and using common language throughout–such simple moves can powerfully expand the reach of our work to people who see, hear, and express in different ways. Composing Access provides several resources for developing accessible presentations (link here) and enacting access throughout your conference experience (link here).

We are committed to incorporating accessibility into the event, and this Access Guide (2020) exists to provide information about accessibility options, issues, and affordances at the conference. If you have any questions about the information in this guide, or have any accommodation requests you’d like to make, please contact the Conference Director Kristi Costello (kcostell@odu.edu).

Information for prospective and registered conference participants:

Closed Captioning: The two keynote sessions and all Zoom sessions will have Live Closed Captions enabled so when you get into the Zoom room for your session/s, you’ll just need to click the button to make them visible. If you run into any difficulty with this, just let the session moderator know and they can help! We have asked the keynote speakers to use microphones and have hired ODU Streaming Services to connect the mic audio with the Zoom captioning.

Lactation Room Access: Lactations rooms are private spaces on campus for nursing moms to pump. There is a Lactation Room available in the Webb Center, Room 2202. You can book this room by adding “webb2219a@odu.edu” to an Outlook calendar meeting or call them at 757-683-4388 for assistance. Find out more here.

Accessible & Gender Inclusive Restrooms: As part of the ongoing effort to promote accessibility, safety, and inclusion, Old Dominion University has individual accessible restrooms and a number of gender-inclusive restrooms on campus. There are individual accessible and Gender Inclusive Restrooms on the first floor of the Webb south of the North Cafe.
