Board of Visitors
The Board of Visitors is the main authoritative body at Old Dominion University (ODU). The Board of Visitors has the power to spend funds, establish rules and regulations, and the power to appoint the president. The current board is made up of 17 members appointed by the Governor of Virginia to a 4 year term and can not serve for longer than two successive terms. History
From 1930-1962, the rules and regulations for the Norfolk Division were made by the Board of Visitors of the College of William & Mary. In 1946, Director Lewis W. Webb, Jr. created an advisory board of local citizens to serve as liaisons to the Board of Visitors in Williamsburg. The board would help grow the Norfolk Division, raising funds for buildings, salaries, and the library. The advisory board was the first step towards independence from the College of William & Mary and included Frank Batten, Charles L. Kaufman, and other future members of the Old Dominion Board of Visitors.
