President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., 2021

Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., president of Radford University, succeeded John R. Broderick as the ninth president of Old Dominion University (ODU) on July 1, 2021. Prior to serving as president of Radford University, Dr. Hemphill served as President of West Virginia University, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Northern Illinois University, and Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students at University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Augustine’s University, as well as Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. Dr. Hemphill is the first African American president of ODU.

Accomplishments

In 2022, President Hemphill announced a merger between ODU and Easter Virginia Medical School (EVMS) that would create an academic health sciences center in Hampton Roads. The merger is set to take place in July 2024.
