Samuel Bieber

Dr. Samuel Bieber (1926-2018) was a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University (ODU) from 1980 to 1995. He also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at ODU from 1980-1982 following the resignation of Dr. Charles O. Burgess.

Personal Information

Dr. Bieber received his bachelor’s degree in 1944 from the Washington Square College of New York University and received his master’s and doctoral degrees from New York University in 1948 and 1953, respectively. Dr. Bieber’s specialty was in the fields of cancer chemotherapy, immuno-suppression, and developmental biology. From 1952-1962, Dr. Bieber was a senior research biologist at the Wellcome Research Laboratories of the Burroughs Wellcome and Company, and was the associate dean of graduate faculties and dean of the Richard L. Connolly College at The Brooklyn Center of Long Island University from 1962-1969. Prior to coming to ODU, Dr. Beiber served as the dean of Teaneck/Hackensack campus, provost, and vice president for academic affairs at Fairleigh Dickinson University from 1969-1980. He presented at conferences and seminars as well as major addresses at Yale University, Brown University, St. Johns University, and New York University. He was a member of the American Association of Cancer Research, the American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, and Phi Sigma.

While in New Jersey, Dr. Bieber was heavily involved in civic and fraternal organizations such as the Rotary Club of Teaneck (N.J.), Bergen Philharmonic, Bergen County Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and the Bergen County National Conference of Christians and Jews.

Service to Old Dominion University

Dr. Bieber came to ODU in 1980 as the vice president for academic affairs and professor of biological sciences. After returning to teaching in 1982, he was involved in implementing the joint Ph.D. program in Biomedical Sciences with Eastern Virginia Medical School and promoted other activities between the two schools. In the Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Bieber was responsible for developing policies and procedures for the guaranteed practicum option for undergraduate students. In 1990, he received the “Most Inspiring Faculty Award” by an honor graduate in the College of Sciences and his expertise in assessment and curriculum development made him sought after by many institutions. In 1995, the Board of Visitors granted him Faculty Emeriti status upon his retirement in 1995.
